Get involved with Garnet Media Group!

Garnet Media Group represents a collective partnership between the official student

media organizations at the University of South Carolina. The partner organizations are

The Daily Gamecock, Garnet & Black, SGTV, and WUSC. These organizations, and by

extension, Garnet Media Group as a whole, receive funding from student fees, and as

such, are governed by the Board of Student Publications and Communications. Garnet

Media Group aims to empower its partner organizations to collaborate with each other,

tell compelling stories, and connect with new audiences while providing additional in-depth

Opportunities

Students are invited to participate in Garnet Media Group regardless of major, year in school or previous experience. Working with GMG gives students the opportunity to discover their interests and strengths, meet a core group of fellow students to connect with, and gain experience that can help them land internships and jobs or just find an outlet for their creativity.

Part-time students taking at least six credit hours and who have paid student activity fees are eligible to join SGTV and WUSC. The Daily Gamecock and Garnet & Black limit student membership to full-time students taking at least 12 credit hours.

Partner Organizations

The Daily Gamecock

The Daily Gamecock is the university's student-run news organization, publishing daily online content, a weekday email edition, and a few special editions each semester that are distributed throughout campus and in the Columbia community. Students on The Daily Gamecock's staff work on section teams: news, arts & culture, sports, opinion, copy desk (editing), design, photo or social media.

Garnet & Black

Garnet & Black is the university's student-run feature magazine, with print issues released twice each year. Students can work for Garnet & Black as a reporter, writer, designer or illustrator, photographer, stylist, copy editor, public relations team member, videographer or social media coordinator.

SGTV

SGTV, the university's student-run television station, publishes online at sgtvonline.com, as well as on YouTube and other social media platforms. SGTV includes five branches that each have additional shows or programs within them: News 4, which covers campus and local news; News 4 Sports, which covers sports at USC; 1080C Productions, which produces short films and narrative television projects; News 4 Entertainment, which features entertainment news, insight into campus trends and culture and other lighthearted content; and Carolina Tonight, a live sketch comedy show with live performances and pre-produced digital shorts. Opportunities are available in acting, reporting, script and news writing, video editing and other media production work.

WUSC

WUSC, the university's student-run radio station, is broadcast on 90.5 FM and HD-1 Columbia and streamed live on the station's website and through iTunes and the TuneIn app. WUSC is a non-commercial station, and most DJs host free-format shows, meaning they have individual control (in accordance with music policy) to choose the type of music they play or show they produce. Experienced DJs can apply to host specialty shows, which can focus on one genre or include non-musical content, like a talk show. WUSC DJs and staff can also contribute blogs and other content to the station's website and social media accounts.

Support Teams

Advertising

Advertising is Garnet Media Group’s primary revenue source and accounts for the majority of the group’s yearly budget. This team is made up of student advertising representatives and led by the advertising director, who is a full-time professional staff member at USC. Student representatives work with campus- and community-based clients and the creative services team to develop advertising solutions using Garnet Media Group’s diverse range of print, broadcast, and digital media. Previous customer service, sales or marketing experience is preferred.

Creative Services

Creative Services is a team of student designers who create advertisements, promotional materials, and other visual communications projects for advertising clients, campus partners, and Garnet Media Group partner organizations. This team is led by the art director, who is a full-time professional staff member. Previous graphic design or visual communications is required.

Marketing & Public Relations

Garnet Media Group’s marketing team, in addition to providing general marketing and public relations support to partner organizations and the group as a whole, is tasked with producing two special publications per year, Best of Carolina and Carolina Insider. Best of Carolina, which highlights audience-voted favorites from campus and surrounding areas, is produced throughout the fall semester and published in the spring. Carolina Insider, a round-up of essential information for newcomers to the Carolina community, is produced in the spring and published at the beginning of the summer. The marketing team is led by a student director and staffed with contributing team members who work in two primary areas: publications and promotions.

Multimedia (Podcasts)

The multimedia team focuses on facilitating and creating collaborative work that includes as many branches of Garnet Media Group as possible. The multimedia team also houses the Garnet Media Group podcasting initiative, which includes a variety of student-produced podcasts focusing on things like intersectional feminism, adventures and exploration, news, true crime, and discussion of pop culture and current events. Opportunities are available to work with our current podcasts on researching, producing, editing, and promoting content.
